On Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 9 a.m., at Fire Keepers Casino Parking Lot - located at 11177 E Michigan Ave, Battle Creek, MI 49014 - we will be kicking off our second bi-annual Veteran’s Ruck March (hiking over distance carrying a load – a common military exercise) which brings together vets and community supporters raising awareness for veteran homelessness and suicides, and builds comradery amongst the veteran community. At 8:45 a.m., we ask all participants be present at the lot for a safety briefing prior to departing. The ruck is roughly 6.6 Miles Long and will end at Dark Horse Brewing Company, 511 S Kalamazoo Ave, Marshall, MI 49068, between 12:00pm and 12:30PM.
We encourage Vets & non-vets to participate in the March. However, if you decline, but wish to join us upon march completion, please join us at Dark Horse around 1pm for a pig roast, raffle prizes, and other shenanigans. Pig roast is donation-based which will get you tasty pork parts and fixins’. Ages 13+, donation is $15; Ages 12 & under, donation is $10. Folks 21 yrs.+ will receive a drink ticket redeemable in the taproom for a pint of your choice (Vet’s Day specialty beers excluded). Non-donors are still invited to come hang out and show your support, and drink some kickass beer, but will be excluded from enjoying pig parts and fixins’.
Food proceeds will go to Veterans Helping Veterans of Southwest Michigan - a local advocate for homeless and displaced veterans. The organization travels southwest Michigan to help Vets and families in need and provide assistance with furniture, household items, clothing, and the basic necessities to achieve sustainability and help end homelessness. Pretty Lake Camp provides free summer camp for Kalamazoo County kids with specific challenges at home, school & in their community, since 1916. It accommodates approximately 800 children every summer.
A limited number of T-Shirts will also be available for purchase in the Dark Horse General Store, with proceeds going to Veterans Helping Veterans. Pre-Orders will be taken for shirts the day of the event in the General Store as well.
Prior to the Ruck March date, participants will be collecting monetary pledges per mile marched to donate to the Vets Helping Vets organization. Contact Derek Moore (Derek.firstname.lastname@example.org) or stop by Dark Horse and ask for Jimmy, if you would like to pledge, participate or just have questions about the event.
